Old Paper Comes Off First
We remove what's on the wall and repair the surface before new paper goes up. New paper over an old layer is only as secure as the layer underneath.

Wrightsville Beach has the oldest housing of any beach town we serve. The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey puts the median build year at 1978, with 54 percent of homes built before 1980 and about 8 percent before 1940. Most other beach towns on this stretch of coast skew toward the 1980s or later.
Age changes what's under the paint. A room from the 1960s or 1970s may still carry an earlier owner's paper, sometimes painted over more than once, and a pre-1940 home may have plaster rather than drywall. We take old paper down and repair the wall as part of a new installation, because new paper only looks as good as the surface it sits on. Paper that has been painted over is usually slower to remove, and your estimate says so before you book.
The housing mix matters too. Nearly a quarter of homes here are in buildings of two to four units, so your home may be one side of a duplex or a unit in a small building. Close to half are held as seasonal or second homes. If you won't be on the island on install day, tell us who will let the crew in.
Getting there is the easy part. The island is a short drive from our Wilmington shop, across the drawbridge, which opens for boats on the hour during the day.
Most of our customers already have their paper, chosen themselves or specified by an interior designer. Our job is to put it on the wall the way it looked in the sample. Our W-2 installers do every job themselves; no part of it is handed to a subcontractor. Our wallpaper installation page covers the full method, from roll counts to the final walkthrough.
If you haven't ordered, a roll count based on the pattern repeat, so you buy once
Old paper removed and the wall repaired before anything new goes up
Wall prep suited to the surface
A plumb line to start from, set with a level rather than taken from the room's corner
Seams matched and the repeat kept level around the room
Inside corners cut against a straight edge, never wrapped
A final walkthrough with you, then cleanup

The difference is mostly in the first hour. Older rooms are often out of square, so the plumb line matters more here than in a new house; the pattern follows the line, not the tilted corner. Walls under old paper get checked for loose plaster or lifting paint before primer goes on. If you've already bought your paper, tell us the room is in an older home, so the roll count allows for the extra trimming an out-of-square room needs. A short order means waiting on a second shipment.

We remove what's on the wall and repair the surface before new paper goes up. New paper over an old layer is only as secure as the layer underneath.

Older rooms often lean a little. We hang from a true plumb line, so the pattern stays level on the third wall instead of following the corner downhill.

A second-generation firm and Wallpaper Installers Association members, we split each strip at an inside corner on a straight edge, so the repeat comes out of the corner level.

Close to half the homes here are second homes. Your property manager can let the crew in, and we'll send photos of the finished room.
From the first conversation to the finished room.
01Request the instant estimate and say whether old wallpaper is still up. A photo of a seam or corner helps us see what's there.
02An out-of-square room eats extra paper, so the roll count allows for it. Then we set a date, typically two to three weeks away.
03We call before heading to the island. The crew removes old paper, repairs the wall, sets a plumb line and hangs the new paper.
04Inspect the room with the installer, or ask for close-up photos if you're off the island. A year of workmanship coverage starts then.
The instant estimate gives you an exact number for your room. We price the job rather than publishing rates, because the same size room can vary a lot here. What moves it:
Wall area and height, which set the number of strips
The paper: grasscloth, vinyl and unpasted designer papers hang differently
The pattern repeat, since large repeats mean more cuts and waste
Old paper: one easy layer, several layers, or paper that has been painted over
Wall repair after removal, which an older wall can need more of
Old paper is the biggest local variable, so tell us what's on the wall now when you request the estimate. The quote you receive is the quote we honor. The paper itself is separate unless you buy it through us, and military households get 10% off.

Papering one wall and repainting the others? We sequence both trades.

Haven't picked a paper? Try trade patterns on a photo of your wall first.

From our Wilmington base, we serve Wrightsville Beach and the surrounding New Hanover County area, plus the rest of the coastal Carolinas corridor.
