Sealed Before It Is Papered
Paste on raw flat paint may let seams lift, or tear the wall when the paper is stripped years from now. A bare painted wall gets a primer or sizing coat first, picked to suit your paper.

Most of Shallotte's housing is a 21st-century build. The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey puts the town's median year built at 2004 and counts 67.2 percent of homes as built in 2000 or later, with the 2000s alone accounting for about two in five. A wall in a house that young has probably only ever been painted, and the coat on it may still be the one the builder rolled on at construction.
That coat shapes the prep. Builder paint is often a flat finish, and some of it stays porous or chalky. Paste brushed straight onto it soaks in unevenly, and years later the paper can come away with paint and drywall facing attached. So the installer tests the paint first, scrapes back anything that lifts, and rolls a primer or sizing coat over the whole wall.
About a quarter of Shallotte homes were built between 1980 and 1999 instead. A room from those decades may hold an earlier owner's paper, which we take down before repairing the wall and hanging the new pattern.
Shallotte is about 40 road miles southwest of our Judges Road shop, measured to Town Hall, the nearest of the southwest Brunswick towns we cover.
Chances are your paper is already picked, by you or by a designer; that is true for most of the people who hire us. Still shopping? Send the pattern, and the roll count comes from its repeat before you spend anything. Your installer draws a paycheck from us as a W-2 employee, and we hand no part of the job to a subcontractor. Corners, seams and repeats are each explained step by step on our wallpaper installation page.
Any earlier paper taken down and the wall repaired
Primer or sizing matched to the wall and the paper
A plumb starting line set with a level
Seams matched, with the repeat held level from wall to wall
Inside corners cut by hand, never wrapped
The finished room reviewed with you, then cleanup

Prep shifts from stripping to sealing. On a wall still wearing its first coat, the installer presses tape to the paint and pulls it off to see whether anything lifts. Paint that comes away is scraped back and spot-primed. Nail pops and taped seams that a flat finish hid get filled and sanded, since paper telegraphs every ridge. Then the entire wall takes a primer or sizing coat. With nothing to strip, this stage on a newer Shallotte wall is usually brief. A 1980s or 1990s room reverses the order: any old paper comes down and the wall is repaired before sealing starts.

Paste on raw flat paint may let seams lift, or tear the wall when the paper is stripped years from now. A bare painted wall gets a primer or sizing coat first, picked to suit your paper.

Ordering for a first papered room is easy to get wrong. Send the pattern before you buy and we work the roll count out from its repeat, so nobody runs short halfway across the wall.

Shallotte Town Hall sits about 40 road miles from our Wilmington shop. Ring us and a person picks up; on the day, we call before we arrive, so you know when the installer will knock.
From the first conversation to the finished room.
01When you ask for an instant estimate, note whether the wall still has the builder's first coat or old paper. That tells us whether the job opens with sealing or removal.
02If the paper is still in your cart, we calculate rolls from its repeat first. Openings usually land two to three weeks out, and we call before we arrive.
03Flaking paint is scraped and patched, a primer or sizing coat goes on, and strips are hung from a plumb line, seams matched.
04Before anything is packed away, you and the installer study each corner and seam on the finished wall. Our 1-year workmanship guarantee covers the installation.
There is no flat rate to post here, because the price depends on the wall you actually have. In a Shallotte house built since 2000, prep is usually sealing rather than stripping. The figure depends on:
How much wall you are covering, and how high the ceiling runs
The paper itself: grasscloth and vinyl behave differently, and unpasted papers hang differently
The pattern repeat, which sets how much is trimmed away at each seam
Builder paint that needs scraping, patching or spot-priming before the sealer
Any earlier paper to take down, most likely in a 1980s or 1990s house
A wall still wearing its first builder coat is checked for anything loose before it is sealed. The quote is the quote we honor. Paper bought from another source is not on our invoice unless you order it through us. Military households get 10% off.
