Primer Chosen for Your Paint
Paste that holds on flat paint can let go on a glossier repaint. The finish on your wall is checked first, and the primer follows from it, so seams stay tight.

Most Sunset Beach homes belong to the drywall era. The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey puts the town's median build year at 2000; the same figure is 1996 at Ocean Isle Beach and 1992 at Holden Beach. Nearly half of Sunset Beach homes, 48.9 percent, were built in 2000 or later. Another 27.4 percent went up in the 1990s, so about three in four date from 1990 or later. Only 8.9 percent predate 1980.
For wallpaper, that settles the surface question early. A house from those years is drywall, so plaster and layer after layer of old paper are rarely the issue. The paint is. A wall that has been repainted since the builder left may carry a satin or eggshell finish, and paste grips gloss differently than flat paint. Two decades of living also leave anchor holes, patched dings and nail pops, and a thin paper shows every one. So the primer is matched to the finish, and patches are skimmed flat before the first strip goes up.
Some rooms already have paper, and the 1990s quarter is where it is most likely. If an earlier owner hung it straight onto unprimed drywall, stripping it may lift the drywall's paper face, which then has to be sealed before new paper goes on. Old paper always comes down first, and the wall is repaired.
Our Sunset Beach service area takes in the island and the mainland neighborhoods, including the golf course developments at Sea Trail, Oyster Bay and Sandpiper Bay. Town Hall, on the mainland side, sits roughly 52 road miles down the coast from our Wilmington base.
By the time most customers call, the paper is chosen, often with a designer's help. If yours isn't ordered yet, give us the pattern and we figure the rolls from its repeat so you buy the right count. A W-2 installer from our own crew hangs it; we never hand work to a subcontractor. Our wallpaper installation page lays out the method end to end.
Earlier paper removed and the wall repaired
A primer or sizing suited to the paper and the paint under it
A true vertical for the first strip, not the corner
Pattern matched at each seam
Inside corners cut by hand, never wrapped
A walk through the room with you, then cleanup

The work starts with a look at the paint. A flat coat and a later satin repaint take paper differently, so the primer is picked after the finish is checked. Holes from shelves, mirrors and TV mounts get filled and sanded level; under a thin or metallic paper, a patch that is merely close will still show. Popped drywall nails are reset and spotted before primer, never papered over. If the room has an earlier paper, it comes off first, and any torn drywall face is sealed so the new paste cannot bubble it. In a 1990s room, or the smaller share built before 1990, tell us what is on the wall when you request the estimate.

Paste that holds on flat paint can let go on a glossier repaint. The finish on your wall is checked first, and the primer follows from it, so seams stay tight.

Twenty years of shelves, mirrors and TV mounts leave marks. Each one is filled and sanded level before paper, because a raised patch under a smooth paper reads like a bump in the pattern.

Intracoastal is a second-generation wallpaper company with Wallpaper Installers Association membership. Corners get cut by hand, and our 1-year workmanship guarantee covers the installation.

Sunset Beach Town Hall is about 52 road miles from our shop. We answer the phone, and we call before we arrive, so you know when the installer will knock.
From the first conversation to the finished room.
01Request the instant estimate and tell us roughly when the house went up and whether the wall now has flat paint, a satin repaint or an older paper.
02Paper still unbought? Send the pattern and the roll count comes back from its repeat. Expect a date two to three weeks from booking; we call before we arrive.
03Anchor holes are filled, popped nails reset, any earlier paper removed, and a primer chosen for your paint goes on. The first strip waits until all of that is done.
04You inspect the room alongside the installer, starting at the seams and the hand-cut corners. Our 1-year workmanship guarantee covers the installation.
You get a price for your own room from the instant estimate. In a Sunset Beach home, what is on the wall now can move the price a good deal: a painted wall and a wall with 1990s paper are different jobs. The figure depends on:
Total wall area and how tall the ceilings run
Paper type: grasscloth, vinyl and unpasted papers hang differently
The repeat, which sets the waste at every seam
An earlier paper to strip, and drywall repair if its face tears
Patching and priming over a glossier repaint
A painted room with only a few anchor holes usually needs less prep time than one with old paper on it. The quote is the quote we honor, and paper you buy yourself stays off our invoice. Military households get 10% off.

Repainting for the rest of the house, from the company that also hangs your paper.

Trade and designer papers tracked down for you, including a pattern you have seen once and cannot find again.

From our Wilmington base, we serve Sunset Beach and the surrounding Brunswick County area, plus the rest of the coastal Carolinas corridor.
